Hand woven reproduction of historical fabric from 13th century Asia Minor in genuine silk and gold thread. Gold pattern on a black field. Perfect for historical costuming or to bring something special to modern interiors and fashions.
This lavishly ornamented, historical pattern includes fine, floral motifs – leaves and blossoms – around medallions containing an exquisitely detailed pair of lions rampant with their long tongues out. Between them is a stylized tree of life. The whole motif comes together to symbolize strength and power.
A surviving fragment of fabric with this pattern bears the name of Sultan Kay Qubad I. The textile draws upon pre-Islamic and Islamic iconography typical for Central Asia, but details of the weave indicate that it was produced in Anatolia. The original fragment is at the Musée des Tissus in Lyon.
This pattern reconstruction is the intellectual property of SARTOR BOHEMIA.
This historical brocade reproduction is woven by hand on a Jacquard loom in pure silk with genuine metallic threads coated in real gold. This combination of premium materials makes this brocade sturdy but soft, gentle to the touch, and breathable. The gold thread will not tarnish or lose its shine.
Reproductions of period brocades such as this are perfect for sewing historical costumes and also bring something special to modern interiors or contemporary fashions.
This brocade has loose threads on the back. We recommend lining it with a natural material such as silk lining or fine linen lining. You can use silk organza or crepeline for additional reinforcement.
This brocade is unique for its artisan origin. It is woven by hand only about half a meter per day (20 inches) and comes from a loom specifically adapted for Sartor needs. We are skipping all the intermediaries and going all the way down to the village level. This way we can ensure that everything we pay goes directly and only to artisan's families.
Because this fabric is hand woven and hand designed, there may be slight irregularities in the weave. These tiny imperfections are not considered defects, but rather a natural feature of hand crafting.
We recommend dry cleaning this fabric at a reliable dry cleaner. In our test of how to wash silk this fabric stood up to gentle hand washing. If you risk hand washing, use lukewarm water and a delicate detergent for woolens; do not wring or squeeze dry; block dry on a flat surface. Dry iron on the back on the lowest setting.
