Hand woven brocade made of genuine silk and metallic thread with a Renaissance pattern drafted according to a famous painting from 15th century. Crimson pattern on a golden field. Perfect for historical costuming as well as modern interiors and contemporary fashions.
We reconstructed this pattern from the work of the in Flanders working German painter Hans Memling (†1494). On the right wing of the triptych, which was made to order for a prominent political representative of Bruges Willem Moreel, there is a depiction of Saint Barbara dressed in a richly patterned fabric.
A similar pattern is also found on several other Memling's paintings. The floral motif is composed by a pronounced stripe of large rosettes and stems. Among the surrounding flowers there are elegant thistles and young chrysanthemums intertwined with decorative elements. The motif repeats itself in vertical strips three times over the width of the fabric.
Authentic period fabric popular in Burgundy fashion. Cloth of gold reflects Renaissance patterns from the years 1450–1520, when such materials symbolized wealth and prestige. The Triptych family Moreel, from which the pattern was taken over, is exhibited by the Groeninge Museum in Bruges.

Cloth of gold was a medieval luxury fabric containing a large amount of metallic thread. Our cloth of gold is hand woven of pure silk with metallic thread plated with real gold. The gold thread will not tarnish or lose its shine. This combination of premium materials makes this fabric sturdy but soft, gentle to the touch, and breathable.
Reproductions of period brocades such as this are perfect for sewing historical costumes and also bring something special to modern interiors or contemporary fashions.
This brocade has loose threads on the back. We recommend lining it with a natural material such as silk lining or fine linen lining.
This brocade is unique for its artisan origin. It is woven by hand only about half a meter per day (20 inches) and comes from a loom specifically adapted for Sartor needs. We are skipping all the intermediaries and going all the way down to the village level. This way we can assure that everything we pay goes directly and only to artisan's families.
Given the technology process of weaving this textile (handwoven fabric based on a hand drawn design), minor errors in weave may occur. These incidental imperfections are not considered as defects but rather a proof of a hand-crafted product.
We recommend dry cleaning this fabric at a reliable dry cleaner. In our tests how to wash silk this fabric stood up to gentle hand washing. If you risk hand washing, use lukewarm water and a delicate detergent for woolens; do not wring or squeeze dry; block dry on a flat surface. Dry iron on the back on the lowest setting.
