Our source for this Gothic-era textile is the vestment worn by Saint Zenobius as depicted by Florentine master Giovanni del Biondo, late 14th century. The work of this Italian painter has inspired us in the past too for our St. Catherine brocade and tortoise and parrot brocade.
You can visit the original work (a tempera wood panel) at the Duomo (the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore) in Florence, where it is affixed to a column in the nave.
Paired, heart-shaped flowers and palm branches are depicted alongside long-necked birds with outspread wings in a pattern that combines beauty and deeper symbolic meaning.
While most artists in Biondo’s time drew, at least loosely, on actual textile designs for their work, Biondo seems to have taken a freer hand, using contemporary textile motifs as a springboard for the creation of his very own symbol-laden pattern:
These elements seem to come together in a coherent message of eternal love, spiritual enlightenment, divine presence, and the promise of eternal life through sacrifice and rebirth. Given that this pattern appears in a depiction of a revered saint, it is logical that its symbolic content would align with themes of piety, sanctity, and divine grace.
The choice of this design was certainly intentional, meant to evoke reverence and a sense of the sacred in those who would encounter it.
This historical brocade reproduction is woven by hand on a Jacquard loom in pure silk with genuine metallic threads toned with real gold. This combination of premium materials makes this brocade sturdy but soft, gentle to the touch, and breathable. The gold thread will not tarnish or lose its shine.
Reproductions of period brocades such as this are perfect for sewing historical costumes and also bring something special to modern interiors or contemporary fashions.
This brocade has loose threads on the back. We recommend lining it with a natural material such as silk or fine linen. For added stiffness try silk organza or crepeline.
This brocade is unique for its artisan origin. It is woven by hand at a rate of only about half a meter per day (20 inches) and comes from a loom specifically adapted for Sartor. We leave out all the intermediaries and go straight to the village level so that we can assure every penny we pay goes directly to the artisans who have worked on this fabric (warpers, weavers, dyers).
Because this fabric is hand woven and hand designed, there may be slight irregularities in the weave. These tiny imperfections are not considered defects, but rather a natural feature of hand crafting.
We recommend dry cleaning this fabric at a reliable dry cleaner. In our test of how to wash silk this fabric stood up to gentle hand washing. If you risk hand washing, use lukewarm water and a delicate detergent for woolens; do not wring or squeeze dry; block dry on a flat surface. Dry iron on the back on the lowest setting.
