This matka silk is woven from spun silk (schappe), the short fibers that are left after silk cocoons are processed. This unique process leaves it with more of a matte finish than classic filament silk. It has less gloss and a rougher appearance, but is airy and light, soft and comfortable.
Matka has the look of a rustic linen but is much more comfortable. Its heaviness makes it great for jackets, blazers, tunics, trousers, and skirts (try pairing it with a lining of silk serge or a silk modal blend). Matka silk can add a touch of class to a rustic interior – try it in pillowcases, throws, and even curtains.
We recommend dry cleaning this fabric at a reliable dry cleaner. In our tests of how to wash silk this fabric stood up to gentle hand washing, but did soften significantly and shrink slightly. If you risk hand washing, use lukewarm water and a delicate detergent for woolens; do not wring or squeeze dry; block dry on a flat surface. Dry iron on the lowest setting with the steam off.
