Product description
Our spring steel boning is stiff, sturdy boning coated with a layer of plastic to prevent corrosion. It does not conform to the body as spiral boning does, but rather molds the figure to the corset. If you want to emphasize the waistline without too much stress on the ribcage, try spiral steel or plastic boning at the sides. When bent by force, steel boning partially retains the curve – a trait that can be used to advantage in shaping the corset.
Trim to the desired length with metal cutters. Smooth the cut ends with a metal file or sander and paint them to prevent rusting. Any acrylic paint will work but can take a while to dry; another option is a silicone caulk, Teflon tape, or UV nail polish hardened under a UV lamp (a tried-and-true trick). Another option is using end caps for spiral boning. Always finish your ends; rough edges can cut through the fabric and make ugly stains.
This boning can also be used in hoop skirts (we recommend 8 mm for more flexible hoops or 6 mm with a sturdier core for stiffer hoops).
To best compare various types and widths of boning, order our boning sampler.
Sold in 10 m lengths. This boning is 5 mm wide.
