Product description

Product description

This ramie voile is very lightweight, yet has a slightly firmer hand – it is not a flowing, drapey fabric. Instead, it holds its shape (similar to organza or fine poplin), making it perfect for more structured designs and creative tailoring details.

This chambray fabric is woven from yarns in varying shades, giving it a refined, gently mottled (mélange) appearance.

Due to its lightness, it is slightly sheer. However, thanks to its dense weave, it is not fully transparent. With a light lining or clever layering, you can easily achieve full opacity, making it suitable even for dresses or wide-leg trousers. Thanks to its similar properties, ramie voile pairs beautifully with linen fabrics and can be used for semi-sheer design elements such as sleeves or yokes.

Pre-washed ramie

This ramie fabric has been softened, so it’s nice to touch, without the roughness and scratchiness associated with raw linen.

Washed ramie similar to washed linen has a sort of crumpled look and a bit more drape, which works beautifully in garments with lots of flow or items you wear against the skin.

When purchasing, keep in mind that washed linens tend to have a slightly narrower bolt width because they shrink during the pre-wash process. The number you see in the width field on our website is the actual, usable width of this fabric.  At Sartor, we measure each fabric when it comes in and always list only the sewable width of the fabric, not including selvedge.

Properties of ramie

Ramie is a natural fibre with properties similar to linen, including:

  • high strength and durability
  • excellent breathability
  • quick drying
  • natural resistance to bacteria

Compared to linen, ramie has a slightly firmer hand, but like linen, it softens with washing without losing its quality. With improper care, it may develop slight fibrillation (loose fibres), so we recommend gentle handling – especially lower spin speeds and avoiding tumble drying.

Uses of ramie voile

The fabric is easy to shape and ideal for creative techniques such as darts, pintucks, and pleats. You can use it to make:

  • dresses with gathered or pleated skirts
  • blouses with pintucks
  • wide-leg trousers or culottes
  • lightweight summer shirts

Use of ramie for home decor

Ramie voile brings a romantic, slightly rustic feel to interiors, similar to fine linen fabrics. It is suitable for:

  • curtains for soft light filtering
  • storage or produce bags
  • table linens

Caring for ramie voile

Proper care will help preserve the natural beauty and longevity of ramie. With rough handling, the fabric may develop slight fibrillation (loose fibres), so we recommend gentle care:

  • wash coloured ramie at 40°C
  • white ramie can be washed up to 60°C
  • as a delicate fabric, use lower spin speeds
  • air dry, and protect coloured fabrics from direct sunlight
  • do not tumble dry
  • iron on a high setting, steam is suitable

FAQ

Is your product assortment always the same?

Most of our fabrics are one-time offers that last until they are sold out. However, some more popular items are always restocked or can be ordered on request. As a rule, this applies to notions, where the selection is pretty consistent, but may also include some types of fabric. Look at the product's availability value – it shows whether the goods are available while supplies last, in the core inventory or in a seasonal collection.

What is a seasonal collection?

The goods in the seasonal collection come directly from our verified manufacturers. We change up the colors on offer from season to season but fabric quality is always constant. For large (wholesale) orders, colors that have been sold out can be reordered individually.

What is the smallest amount of fabric I can order?

The minimum fabric order is a length of 20 cm.

Do you accept orders by phone or email?

No. We only accept retail orders through the e-shop. This eliminates situations where someone else orders the last of an item while your order is still sitting in our inbox or lies jotted on a bit of paper by the phone. By purchasing online, you are putting an immediate hold on the product. Of course, you can always call or write to us if you need help making your selection.

Do you ship abroad?

Yes. We ship worldwide. The price of shipping is automatically calculated at checkout before payment after you select the country of delivery and the preferred carrier. If you do not find your country in the dropdown list, please contact us. You will find a rough overview of shipping costs in our shipping and payment terms.

When will my order be delivered?

The estimated delivery date with your selected carrier can be seen before payment is made at checkout. It is calculated as the time for processing and packing your order plus the time it takes the selected carrier to deliver to a specific destination – this can be from 2 days for delivery within the Czech Republic to a week for delivery outside the EU. Expect longer delivery times during big sales and holidays.
