Product description

Product description

Create something meaningful from the legacy left behind by generations past. You are viewing a rare, handwoven fabric made from a natural linen-cotton blend, salvaged from an old attic in Slovakia — a country with a rich tradition in textile craftsmanship. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind, authentic treasure, perfect for interior decor, traditional costumes, historical garments, or even unique modern fashion.

A fabric with a story

This vintage handwoven fabric brings history right into your hands. It was woven on domestic looms, often in rural homes, up until the mid-20th century. After that, such craftsmanship slowly faded away and now lives mostly in museums and private collections. The fabric you’re purchasing could be several decades old — some pieces are even over 100 years old.

A rare opportunity

Supplies of vintage textiles like this are becoming increasingly scarce. We never know when – or if – we’ll come across more of these archival fabrics. That makes every piece a limited and precious opportunity to own genuine craftsmanship from the hands of our ancestors.

Characteristics of vintage linen-cotton fabric

  • Narrow width: Handwoven fabrics from traditional looms typically come in widths of 60–66 cm (23–26"). Please check width carefully before purchasing.

  • Storage marks: These fabrics were usually folded and rolled for long-term storage. You might notice a crease – it can be washed out and ironed.

  • Color stripes on edges: Some pieces may have colored end stripes – these were practical markers used by rural women to identify their own fabric. We recommend ordering an extra 6 inches (15 cm) if cutting from the edge.

  • Authentic irregularities: Small imperfections such as slight weave inconsistencies, nubs, or color variations are not flaws — they are signs of genuine handcraft. Minor stains may be present and can usually be removed with natural or modern methods, depending on your preference. We don’t pre-treat the fabric to preserve its integrity.

What can you make from vintage linen?

This vintage linen-cotton blend comes in various weights (please check the fabric's GSM value).

  • Heavier fabrics (200+ GSM): Great for kitchen towels, table linens, and durable home textiles.

  • Lighter weights: Ideal for clothing — these fabrics are especially loved by historical reenactors and folk costume makers.

  • Historical sewing projects: While the fabric may be "just" decades old, the way it was made is nearly identical to techniques used centuries ago.

  • Modern fashion or decor: Use it just like any modern linen — for dresses, shirts, bags, curtains, cushions. This is your chance to add a piece of cultural heritage to your wardrobe or home.

Care

Wash at 60°C. Air dry. May be exposed to direct sunlight. (If you have dyed this fabric, launder at 30°C and dry in the shade.) Iron on the highest setting; may also be steamed. If machine drying, use a short, gentle cycle.

FAQ

Should I pre-shrink this fabric before sewing?

Generally, pre-shrinking is needed for linen, cotton, and rayon, but for finer fabrics (light rayon, Tencel and modal) proceed with care – don't use hot water or a hot iron, simply launder the fabric the way you will be laundering the completed garment.

Are your fabrics colorfast?

The fabrics in our core inventory, seasonal collections and limited editions are from repeated production cycles that we have quality-tested – given proper care their colors should not bleed. Fabrics that are on offer while supplies last are one-off products that have not been individually tested. For flax and wool, we recommend a sample test.

Does linen fade in the sun?

Yes. Like other natural materials linen can fade in the sun. Avoid hanging dyed linen to dry in the sun and do not hang dyed linen garments in places at home where there is direct sunlight either. For curtains and drapes, take into account that the color will fade over time or back them with a blackout fabric.

Is your product assortment always the same?

Most of our fabrics are one-time offers that last until they are sold out. However, some more popular items are always restocked or can be ordered on request. As a rule, this applies to notions, where the selection is pretty consistent, but may also include some types of fabric. Look at the product's availability value – it shows whether the goods are available while supplies last, in the core inventory or in a seasonal collection.

What is a seasonal collection?

The goods in the seasonal collection come directly from our verified manufacturers. We change up the colors on offer from season to season but fabric quality is always constant. For large (wholesale) orders, colors that have been sold out can be reordered individually.

What is the smallest amount of fabric I can order?

The minimum fabric order is a length of 20 cm.

Do you accept orders by phone or email?

No. We only accept retail orders through the e-shop. This eliminates situations where someone else orders the last of an item while your order is still sitting in our inbox or lies jotted on a bit of paper by the phone. By purchasing online, you are putting an immediate hold on the product. Of course, you can always call or write to us if you need help making your selection.

Do you ship abroad?

Yes. We ship worldwide. The price of shipping is automatically calculated at checkout before payment after you select the country of delivery and the preferred carrier. If you do not find your country in the dropdown list, please contact us. You will find a rough overview of shipping costs in our shipping and payment terms.

When will my order be delivered?

The estimated delivery date with your selected carrier can be seen before payment is made at checkout. It is calculated as the time for processing and packing your order plus the time it takes the selected carrier to deliver to a specific destination – this can be from 2 days for delivery within the Czech Republic to a week for delivery outside the EU. Expect longer delivery times during big sales and holidays.
