Origin & Pattern
Authentic reproduction of a textile depicted in the portrait of Saint Catherine by Theodoric of Prague for the Chapel of the Holy Cross in Karlstein Castle, 1360–1364.
Theodoric of Prague was the court painter to Charles IV, King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor. His depiction of Saint Catherine of Alexandria is exceptional for its ornamentation and the detailing of the saint’s garments. Her tunic is shown in blue with a tone-on-tone floral pattern of stylized chrysanthemums and other foliage with motifs of six-petalled roses in glittering gold.
Saint Catherine enjoyed wide popularity in 14th century Bohemia, and was certainly highly revered by Charles IV, who credited her with his victory at the battle of San Felice on her name day.
Though Master Theodoric created his Gothic masterpiece in Bohemia, textiles like this one would have been found as early as the 13th century in marketplaces throughout the East.
The portrait of Saint Catherine upon which this reproduction is based is currently on view in the medieval art collection at the National Gallery in Prague.
