This yellow brocade is a beautiful, opulent fabric created using the jacquard technique, which makes the production of highly detailed, woven patterns possible. Its intense colors, effective combination of matte and luster, and tactile surface, put it in a class of its own. Historically, brocade has always numbered among prestige fabrics, and that remains true to this day.
Though woven of very fine threads, brocade is sturdy and stiff, making it a good choice for tailored patterns and garments that have to hold their shape. Use it for formal and wedding gowns, skirts, jackets, and evening bags and clutches. In everyday wear it excels in pencil skirts, trousers, or jackets. Menswear applications include ties and bow ties, vests, blazers, and dinner jackets. It is a classic for home decor (pillowcases, tablecloths, drapes) and a go-to for corsets and historical and theatrical costumes.
This brocade is made of polyester. It is sturdy and holds its shape, yet is thinner and slicker than our rayon blend brocade. When choosing a lining for it, reach for something sturdy, such as rayon lining, silk satin or silk serge.
Brocade is a treat to sew with as long as you keep in mind its tendency to fray. Due to the way brocade is put together, the weave is not as tight in some spots and can more easily come loose. Fraying here is not a defect, it is simply something that must be taken into account. Allow a wider seam allowance when cutting and finish the edges with a zigzag or overlock stitch as soon as pieces are sewn together (do this right after cutting if you need to work with pieces before sewing). Reinforce stressed seams (in a tight-fitting gown, trousers, a corset) by applying a strip of fusible interfacing before sewing. A little extra effort will get you stunning results.
This polyester brocade may be hand washed (30°C/86°F), but this will cause slight shrinkage and crimping. If you want to avoid that, we recommend entrusting it to a reliable dry cleaner. Unlike its silk cousin, this brocade will not soften when laundered. Press on the back using the synthetics setting; if the fabric has been pre-shrunk, you may steam it.
