Japanese minimalism
This pattern was created by designer Naomi Ito for her Nani IRO line. Ito works primarily in watercolor, drawing inspiration from nature and Japanese art and mingling minimalism, a light hand, and an extraordinarily sharp eye. Ito’s designs can run the gamut from gentle and soothing to lively and dynamic, but they are, at all times, deeply poetic and extremely well thought out.
Original designer print
New Morning is a floral design with light watercolor brush strokes in pale but vivid tones. It captures the freshness of a morning in bloom as the first rays of sunlight sift through the flowers. The contours of blossoms are highlighted here and there with slender silver strokes. The pale background lends this print an especially delicate airiness. The gray background provides a wonderful contrast to the delicate blossoms.
Qualities
As its name implies, double gauze is woven in two layers. It is essentially two fine, loosely woven panels joined together at points at regular intervals. Ordinary, single-layered gauze is quite sheer and not terribly strong; its loose weave makes it easy to damage. Combined in a double layer it gains durability and stability while still retaining its airy lightness and wonderful breathability.
Uses
This fabric looks great in loosely cut garments like casual tops, tunics, dresses, and wide pants. Let the print stand out in simple cuts – a wrap-around dress, a tunic, a boxy sheath dress, a full skirt – or give a nod to Japanese tradition and try your hand at a summery kimono jacket. Can you see this print in your interior? Why not make a set of curtains.
Care
Machine wash cool (30°C). Iron on cotton setting. Because this is a delicate fabric, select a lower spin cycle; gentle handling will prolong its lifetime.
