This medieval pattern features highly stylized animal figures of pet dogs and dragon-birds. Each animal motif is repeated in a horizontal band, alternating with bands of palmettes and leaves. The overall composition and the stylization of the flora and fauna indicate Persian and Chinese influences. The original was produced at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries in Italy and a fragment made its way to the collection of liturgical textiles at Uppsala Cathedral in Sweden, where it can still be found today.
This historical brocade reproduction is woven by hand on a Jacquard loom in pure silk with metallic thread coated in real gold. The combination of premium materials and heavier weight makes this brocade sturdy but soft, gentle to the touch, and breathable. The gold thread will not tarnish or lose its shine. Reproductions of period brocades such as this are perfect for sewing historical costumes and also bring something special to modern interiors or contemporary fashions.
This brocade has loose threads on the back. We recommend lining it with a natural material such as silk or fine linen.
This unique fabric is made even more special by its origins. It comes to you from the workshop of our weaver Aladdin in India, where it is woven (at a rate of about a half meter per day) on a hand loom made especially for Sartor. Because we work without a middleman, the full production price goes to the weaver’s family, making this a true fair-trade fabric.
Because this fabric is hand woven and hand designed, there may be slight irregularities in the weave. These tiny imperfections are not considered defects, but rather a natural feature of hand crafting.
Reproductions of period brocades such as this are perfect for sewing historical costumes and also bring something special to modern interiors or contemporary fashions.
We recommend dry cleaning this fabric at a reliable dry cleaner. In our tests of how to wash silk this fabric stood up to gentle hand washing. If you risk hand washing, use lukewarm water and a delicate detergent for woolens; do not wring or squeeze dry; block dry on a flat surface. Dry iron on the back on the lowest setting.
